Weight Gain in Pregnancy is comprised of (approximately):

  • Baby’s weight gain                                                                                    3.4 kg
  • Maternal stores of Fat, Protein, and other nutrients                   3.2 kg
  • Body Fluid                                                                                                       1.8 kg
  • Blood                                                                                                             1.8 kg
  • Breasts                                                                                                          0.9 kg
  • Amniotic Fluid                                                                                               0.9 kg
  • Uterus                                                                                                          0.68 kg

TOTAL                     12.68 kg.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends Average Weight Gain for most women over the course their entire pregnancy to be between 10 and 16 kg.

Many mothers are perturbed by the fact that they are gaining weight and that it might be difficult to shed the weight once their baby is born. However, weight gain is a natural phenomenon in pregnancy, as long as you are not too obese or gain weight disproportionately. The best way to reduce weight post pregnancy is to exclusively breastfeed your baby for a minimum of 6 months.

  • Well it is right that women gains weight after child's birth .I think light foods and foods free from fats and oil would be helpful in losing weight gradually and take time to lose the weight which is increased due to baby's birth . Do you think Exercise would also be useful If so then which exercises can be done ? .
