We get lots of calls from expectant mothers asking for tips for normal delivery. Such questions are more frequent from first time mothers whose natural apprehension for the safety and wellbeing of their babies, combined with lack of empathy and support from their current medical care givers and absence of a support system that used to exist in joint families drives them to worry all the time. I tell them that birth is a natural, physiological process that their bodies are capable of performing and which nature has been perfecting for thousands of years. Except for some severe medical conditions, over 95% of women are capable of normal delivery, provided they are supported, encouraged, and given the right facts about good diet, exercise, labor, childbirth, etc.

While there is no magic wand that will guarantee a 100% normal delivery outcome, there are definitely things that you can do to help yourself become an active participant in your baby’s birth and not be relegated to a “patient” in your hospital subject to IVs, drugs, and medical procedures. These include the following:

1. Have a balanced diet for each stage of your pregnancy
2. Maintain an active lifestyle, with regular, brisk walking schedules
3. Drink lots of water (8 – 10 glasses a day)
4. Do gentle exercises that will make your body fit and flexible, especially the pelvic region, for the baby’s descent to become easy
5. Keep yourself emotionally happy and stress free. Listen to good music, and try to be positive
6. Avoid “test syndrome” where some women are constantly testing themselves (e.g. ultrasound, blood tests, scans etc) and worrying themselves to death
7. Conduct your due diligence on hospitals/doctors you are going to select for your childbirth. Check if your doctor or hospital will support your wish for normal delivery? Check what are their normal delivery rates. After all, it is you who are the customer. Become an informed customer, who has done their research. Dont you do due diligence when you buy a car?
8. Create a Birth Plan, which is a document that articulates your and your husband’s expectations of your hospital when you go there for giving birth. You might want to create the Birth Plan in advance and share it with your doctor who will be at birth, and work with her to arrive at a mutually acceptable plan.
9. Attend a childbirth class or prenatal class such as Lamaze in your city or neighborhood. If there is one thing that you can do for yourself to help you during your pregnancy and childbirth, it is this. Choose the right instructor who is certified to teach Lamaze classes, and discuss with her your fears, concerns or wishes. A good teacher will take the time to answer all your questions patiently, be available for you anytime, and be a reliable resource for all your queries. A good Lamaze teacher will make you knowledgeable and confident that normal delivery is not at all difficult and that you are capable of it.
10. Write or call us if you have any questions.

  • Kpsrinivas

Low pelvic bone is reported in my wifes case and our doctor said its impossible to have normal delivery..Is it true? She is in her 9th month....Expected date is 25th Dec...Please advice.

  • Dr_Vijaya

Until a good trial of labor has been given, nobody can say it is impossible to have a natural birth. Babies do not grow beyond what their mother's pelvises can accommodate. Normally, in our practice we never check internally, nor for pelvic sizes until the mother is in good active labor. Then too, we check to assess progress, not to tell her that her pelvis is flat, or low or small or other stories that are usually not true. I would advice you to find a care provider who will give your wife a true chance at normal labor and birth!

    Hope this helps,
    Dr. Vijaya

  • Manojshcl

    hai dear ,
i am karthika i am 24 yrs old and 4monts pregnancy , i want to know about what kind of foods i have to take? is it good for taking non -veg for baby?

  • Dr_Vijaya

Karthika, good food is the building block of your pregnancy. Please refer to my older post re: diet in pregnancy. Over and above this, ensure that you get 80-100 gms of protein per day. This is super important not only for a healthy baby, but also to prevent late complications of pregnancy such as high blood pressure. Yes, non-veg food that is well cooked is a good source of protein (and if it is red meat, iron as well). If you can have milk, eggs &/or non-veg, paneer, daals, dry fruits/nuts, dahi, then you will come close to the required amount of protein a pregnant mother needs.

  • Khan_zeenat18

hi i am 23 old and this is my first pregnancy..and i am 35 week pregnant..my height is 5ft and now i weigh around 62 kgs..according to my sonogram i have a single loose loop near my babys neck evrything else is fine..what to know is it possible to have normal pregancy.

  • Dr_Vijaya

Zeenat, 30% of all babies are born with a cord around the neck. Simply because the sonogram has found a loose loop of cord does not mean that you cannot have a natural birth. The important thing is to monitor the baby's heart rate during labor;most of the times the baby is just fine (especially if the mother is allowed to labor without unnecessary medical intervention), and the mother goes o to have a wonderful natural birth! Hope this helps. All the best!

  • rekha singh

I am to second time pergnant . I fast child born to big operationin in a Hospital    . I want  know normal delivery  .  my name is rekha singh and my age is a 23 years . my wait is 60kg  Plzzzzzzzzz give me solution  my email ID is a as11090@gmail.com

  • Dr_Vijaya

Rekha, absolutely there is no reason that you should not try for a natural birth. Most healthy women can have a natural birth the second time around. You have to educate yourself - please check out sites like www.vbac.com, www.ican.org, www.cims.org and www.vbac.in . This will give you good information to become an informed consumer. Also please feel to contact us by email or phone - our contact information is on the website. The best thing that you can do for yourself is to find a care provider who will support you in your desire to have a natural birth, and give you the best possible trial at labor. Hope this helps.

  • muneershah shah

i am 23 yrs and 48 kg and can u plz give me advise which delivery is better ,,,,,

  • Dr_Vijaya

In otherwise healthy mothers, a natural delivery is always better than a C-section. The benefit of a natural birth is enormous for both mothers and their babies. Please educate yourself, attend Lamaze classes and prepare yourself mentally and physically for a natural birth.

  • Moumita Mukherjee

I am 29 yrs old and 50 Kgs. I am now 19 wks og pregnency..I am working in a Engg.College. I want normal delivery..Is it possible?

  • Aschindhe

I am 4'9 so the dr is saying it is hard to have a normal delivery , is this true . all my reports are fine and no complications as i am in my 31st week. please let me know i could do any thing about this

  • Dr_Vijaya

No, height has no correlation with your bodies ability to birth your baby naturally. If this were so, African Pygmies would never be able to give birth! As long as you are healthy, you have every reason to believe that you can give birth naturally. Stay positive, stay fit, eat well ... and if your doctor is still negative about this, find a different care provider who can treat you and your body with respect. Best- Vijaya
