You are now the proud parents of a brand new baby. Amidst all the excitement (and some apprehension) of becoming a new parent I am sure you have a million questions that are waiting to be asked. Here are some facts about your new born that you should know in the first few days. These are not in any order of importance:
- You may notice your baby has creased skin. This is normal and the creases will go away after a few days.
- He may have blisters on his head and unless they are severe there is nothing to worry about
- He may have some vermix (a waxy substance coating the skin). This is good for the baby and WHO guidelines tell us that vermix should not be removed when bathing your baby. It will automatically fall off in a few days.
- Your baby may have little or moderate hair
- She will have strong grasping reflex
- Baby will recognize mom/dad’s voices right away
- He notices high-pitch sounds
- Her sense of taste is very strong
- She can see objects in close range, between 8 to 10 ft. Her eyes see contrasting colors better – Black and White, and Bold Geometric shapes
- She can recognize mother’s face within a few hours of birth
- You may notice that the baby’s head is not perfectly round, and may be oblong (caput). This is usually formed because of the pressure from the uterus or vaginal wall during natural birth. In most cases, no treatment is necessary and the scalp will regain its shape in a few days.
